“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll
go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night
they caught nothing. (John 21:3 NIV)
John 21 is an amazing chapter. One of the things that strikes me is
the response of the disciples … Because I’ve seen it in my life and
Their hope in their Messiah, their savior, was crushed by
circumstances. Some of the circumstances were very much out of their
hands. Some of the circumstances led to feelings I guilt and failure
because of denial of Christ or the inability to help him.
Their reaction was to go right back to where they were when they were
first called. How often do we do that when we give up hope in the work
of Christ in our own life? We resort to what we once knew. It may be
work … Depending on ourselves. It may be some sort of sin. It may be
the crowd tht dragged us into sin. For these guys, it was an
occupation instead of dreams of the Kingdom of God here on Earth.
Don’t give up hope. Don’t resort to what you once knew.
As Jesus asked Peter, do you love me? … And he followed it with Feed
my sheep … Feed my lambs … FOLLOW ME.
